Chapter 7 : Too close for Comfort

They were getting closer.

Not in loud declarations or stolen touches—

but in shared smiles, lingering glances, and conversations that flowed too easily now.

The texts had turned bolder.

The jokes more personal.

And the silences… comfortable.

So when both families decided on a “simple dinner together”, everyone knew it wasn’t just about food.

The Restaurant – Evening

The restaurant was warm, elegant, buzzing with quiet conversations and clinking cutlery.

Aditi walked in beside her parents, dressed in a soft pastel saree, hair loose, confidence effortless—until she saw him.

Arjun was already there.

Leaning back in his chair.

Black shirt. Rolled sleeves.

That smirk—the one that now felt dangerously familiar.

Their eyes met.

His gaze lingered a second longer than polite.

Hers dropped just a bit too quickly.

Too close, her heart whispered.

Settling In

Everyone took their seats—parents on either side, siblings conveniently placed to observe and tease.

By pure coincidence (and suspicious planning),

Aditi and Arjun ended up sitting next to each other.

Karthik grinned.

Riya noticed.

The parents pretended not to.

“Comfortable?” Arjun murmured, leaning slightly toward her.

She nodded, then quickly added, “Yes.”

His smirk deepened.

“Good. Because I plan to be.”

Her ears burned.

Teasing Begins

Riya rested her chin on her hand.

“So,” she said sweetly, “you two talk a lot these days.”

Aditi nearly choked on her water.

Arjun didn’t miss a beat.

“Healthy communication is important, don’t you think?”

Karthik laughed. “Didn’t know communication came with smiling at your phone at midnight.”

Aditi glared. “You spy.”

Meera smiled knowingly.

“It’s nice to see them comfortable.”

Vikram nodded. “Yes. Very… comfortable.”

Arjun leaned closer, voice low.

“Your family is brutal.”

She whispered back, “You started this.”

“I intend to finish it,” he replied softly.

Her heart skipped. Hard.

The Almost-Touch

As food arrived, his arm brushed hers.

Accidental.

But neither moved away.

She stiffened for half a second—then relaxed.

Arjun noticed.

His voice dropped again.

“You’re shy,” he said, not teasing—observing.

“Only when someone stares,” she replied quietly.

“Then I should stop,” he said.

He didn’t.

Parents Watching, Sparks Flying

Meera leaned toward Anita.

“They seem… happy.”

Anita smiled. “Yes. And very aware of each other.”

Raghavan cleared his throat.

“We should give them time.”

Arjun caught that—and grinned.

He turned to Aditi.

“Looks like we’re being noticed.”

She laughed softly. “You enjoy this.”

“Only because you blush,” he said, eyes dark, amused.

“And because it means you care.”

She looked at him then—really looked.

“…Maybe,” she admitted.

That was all it took.

The End of Dinner

As they stood to leave, Arjun held the chair for her.

Old-fashioned.

Intentional.

Their fingers brushed.

This time, neither pulled away.

From across the room, Karthik muttered,

“They’re doomed.”

Riya smirked.

“Oh, completely.”
